Laredo’s Horror film Fest is back

Presented by Laredo Film Society, Fronterror Film Fest is an annual horror festival in Laredo, Texas, celebrating the emerging filmmakers transforming the Texas-Mexico borderlands into one of horror's most exciting new frontiers!

Join us in Laredo, TX for a day of creative regional shorts that are truly reinventing the slasher genre. Our program will repeat across 3 showtimes – all featuring the exact same lineup of films. The only difference is the Q&A segment.

The Theme: Slasher ERAS

Slashers have a special place in our hearts. They align with several of our values: inventive practical special effects, thrilling cinematography, and most especially, indie/low-budget/DIY filmmaking.

But they’ve fallen out of popularity for several good reasons: outdated tropes and stereotypes, racism, transphobia, and misogyny.

So we thought it’d be a good time to reinvent this horror genre with more subversive storytelling. Filmmakers were challenged to create a modern slasher film pulling heavy inspiration from either the 70s, 80s, or 90s slasher era.

It's time for a more modern, inclusive, border-based crop of filmmakers to put their own spin on the slasher genre.

Festival FAQs

  • Yes! The entire program of films will play at each showtime, the same exact same lineup of films.

    The ONLY difference between the showtimes is the Q&A.

    Showtime 1 has no Q&A; Showtime 2 has a Q&A with some of the films’ actors; Showtime 3 has a Q&A with some of the films’ writers and directors.

  • Yes, we’re happy to process refunds up to 5 days before the festival.

  • Not exactly…Given the nature of the slasher genre, most–if not all of the films–will have adult content, including graphic violence, lots of gore, sexual situations, and language not suitable for kids.

    If you’re a parent, it’s your call.

  • To avoid large crowds taking up space at the Alamo Drafthouse lobby, we’d prefer that you didn’t!

    Instead, make plans to arrive right on time.

    Each showtime starts with a pre-show, curated and edited by Robert from the Laredo Film Society Board.

    Showing up right on time for your showtime means you get to settle in, mingle, and enjoy the pre-show we’ve made for your enjoyment!

  • Yes, to purchase! Alamo Drafthouse’s menu will be available for you to order from.

    Use the Alamo QR code on the table in front of you to order food and drinks.

    Everything is DELICIOUS, honestly!

Submission FAqs

  • No, sorry! Submissions have closed and we simply cannot reopen them.

    The festival is coming up, and we need time to watch the films, review and rate them, put the program together, and notify filmmakers whether or not their films were selected.

    There’s always next year!

  • The Notification Date on FilmFreeway that you can see on the festival page is October 10, but we’ll likely let filmmakers know on October 7!

  • You get one (1) free ticket if your film is selected!

    We won’t have a specific seat reserved for you, though, so make plans to arrive early to claim your seat.

  • 1-2 actors per film can participate in the actor Q&A during Showtime 2.

    And 1-2 writers/directors per film can participate in the writer/director Q&A during Showtime 3.

  • There’ll be 5 winners! Our awards are:

    • Best Blood

    • Best Hair, Make-up, and Costumes

    • Best Ensemble Cast

    • Audience Choice

    • Jury’s Selection
