For more than seven years, Laredo Film Society has fostered a love for cinema in our border community, breathing life into Laredo’s rich stories. At LFS, we believe in embracing a Laredo that’s artistically transformed, where the tools to create cinematic art are accessible to everyone. That is why our space is more than just a building: it’s a place that film enthusiasts can call home. From community programmed screenings to educational film-related workshops, every event is part of a larger picture of what we stand for. Our mission? To use film as an artistic, cultural, and educational practice to build community and empower locals to create. More than entertainment, our programming inspires talented young filmmakers to create and unite our community. Let’s look at our mission in action through our upcoming programs for August and September.
Join us on August 22, 2025, from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM at our headquarters for Film Club Friday, a screening programmed by Edgar Gonzalez, an LFS supporter. The film Edgar chose explores the life of an eccentric comedian known for his unpredictable shows. Experience his real-life journey to fame and the mystery surrounding his quirky performances. Attendees will also discuss their ideas and interpretations in a Q&A session with our host. This event is an excellent opportunity for locals to connect through meaningful cinematic experiences.

Want to be in a space where film meets culture and memory? Join us at Casa Ortiz during Caminarte on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 7:00 PM. This event features a molino workshop (how to grind maíz to masa using a molino), led by Austin-based artist Luna Vela, followed by a screening of Bisonte, her short experimental film that explores themes of cultural heritage, food, and religion. After Bisonte, stay for the MIRAAA Media Fest award-winning short film Inglés Sin Fronteras, created by Gil Rocha and Tres Tekuanis. LFS values creating spaces where culture and cinematic art can be exhibited and celebrated together.
Film Club Friday continues September 12, 2025, at 7:00 PM at LFS headquarters. Immerse yourself in a chilling film following the story of a social worker who unknowingly works in a haunted house. This community screening will explore themes of fate and unresolved emotions, opening the floor for conversation with our host, Roy Gonzalez. Our Film Club nights are a unique opportunity to discuss thematic elements in film, reflecting our commitment to educational programming.

Interested in learning more about creating a film? Step into Mexican-American Filmmaker Sharon Arteaga’s world on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 1:30 PM. This workshop at TAMIU will feature Sharon’s work as she shares her story and insights on thoughtful storytelling. During this workshop, attendees can participate in a Q&A session and gain industry insight on navigating the filmmaking process. Opportunities like this allow us to equip our community with the tools and knowledge they need to create their own stories.
On the subject of local filmmaking, we’re thrilled to introduce a new project currently in the works! To further support Laredo creatives, we’re happy to announce our Film Labs, a program designed to empower filmmakers by giving them a space to showcase their works-in-progress and receive valuable feedback. Participating filmmakers openly welcome honest feedback and receive constructive criticism from invite-only attendees, all of whom hold different backgrounds of filmmaking experience. LFS is looking forward to rolling out our first Film Lab, hosted by Carlos Flores, a local filmmaker and attorney, who will present a short film in progress. Ready to receive honest feedback for your short film? Please email hello@laredofilm.org!
Finally, enjoy an enchanting Film Club Friday hosted by board member Norma Ortiz, on September 26, 2025, at 7:00 PM at LFS HQ. The selected animated film follows a young woman on her path to lift a curse, involving a mysterious wizard and a magical castle. By highlighting intricate artistry along with detailed animation, we provide a space to foster imagination.
At Laredo Film Society, we offer a place for all things film. Every event is a chance to experience the power cinema has to transform our city, so we invite you to join us and help us spread the love for cinematic art one event at a time. Keep up with ticket info on laredofilm.org/tickets!
